Epic review

Posted : 10 years, 4 months ago on 18 July 2014 02:58 (A review of Epic)

I love animation movies, I love them a lot heck I am an animator myself and strive to one day get a job in a studio and work on a movie so you can imagine, I love animation and everything about it so now let's talk about epic.
Epic is very beautiful movie and they pushed technical envelop in making a forest come to life. Such beautiful designs and well crafted environment and trust me, you will go wow at least one time during the movie. Everything works well, you have your good guys, your bad guy, your protagonist who is quite likable, an adventurous mission and world at stake BUT the whole story and everything died for me because the movie failed in its storytelling.

The balance between comedy and tragedy is sooo odd. Right when a tragedy happens, a character dies and you are all sad and letting it sink in, director hits you with a very weird mis-placed pun and you instead of laughing get irritated. It happens so many times in the movie that I got irritated after a while. I wish they had figured out a balance between things.
There is also a timing thing. The whole movie is a tale of one night and in many scenes they give you this sense of urgency that you have to do a certain action, right then and there but movie takes charge and you have weird dialogue exchanges, cat fights and cutting jokes at each other part that makes you go, are you really doing that, NOW?
I think they added those puns and moments so to keep the movie from going too dark but it made the whole adventure weird.

Because of that irritation, I am giving it my first ever low score and it makes me sad. 7/10 most of it is bc of production design.

Now You See Me review

Posted : 11 years, 2 months ago on 9 September 2013 12:40 (A review of Now You See Me)

Everyone has been saying how great this movie was on twitter and facebook and well 1st hour of this movie is really great but as 2nd hr starts, things fall apart. You see, it has great camera angles, amazing cinematic effects and vfx but it all falls apart when it pulls "red lights (2012)" on you. Seriously, what a disappointment.

Casino Royale review

Posted : 11 years, 2 months ago on 30 August 2013 11:20 (A review of Casino Royale)

For God's sake, it is a spoof!
Funny thing about spoofs: they are made to make fun of things, stories and cliches. So do not expect this movie to put forward intelligent questions.
That being said, I watched this movie for Peter Sellers mostly. It was a disappointment that he showed up almost half way through the movie and then was suddenly killed.
This movie was made in almost 12 million dollars; huge amount of money and was doomed from the start. Peter acted very unprofessionally and would not go to sets on week at end. There were 6 directors who ended up shooting and got fired for one reason or another. Peter refused to share screen with Orson and overall well it was a very bad production time. That is why when I watched the movie I went with zero expectations. There are some times, where you can see that crew and studio did put up an effort to make it legit but script had little problems here and there and overall it doesn't glue well together but nonetheless I enjoyed my time watching it and if you are a peter Sellers fan then it will be fun to see him acting in a romantic lead. :D something different.
Enjoy the 60s movie charm with silly charades. :)

The Life and Death of Peter Sellers review

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 3 August 2013 03:02 (A review of The Life and Death of Peter Sellers)

Very recently I watched Lolita 1962 and Dr. Strangelove 1964 by Stanley Kubrick and I loved Peter Sellers performances. Dr. Strangelove in my opinion is a masterpiece. Lolita was fine, boring at times and only Peter's presence kept me interested in it. Bottom line I loved Peter Seller and decided to google him and then I ended up watching this movie. *Fangirling* I know :D

Geoffrey Rush gives us a splendid performance as Mr. Sellers. Trust me, it must be his career's toughest acting job. Portraying an actor who did so many characters and had no real personality of his own is a real challenge and he did it so amazingly. Hats off to him.
Supporting cast was really good. I just found it hard to believe that Stanley Tucci was Stanley Kubrick. hmm that was a bit let down. (not his acting wise though)

So did I like the movie? I gave it a 7 because of the performances but in order to really get what is going on in the movie you have to know a little bit of Peter Sellers life before. Like for instance, no timeline is mentioned whatsoever. So we know it is linear but we don't know the yr in which this all is happening. So we jump from goons to early movies and then to Bafta in like minutes. I was like it went that fast? really? So I was googling movies to check which yr of his life we were in then. Looking at Peter was no help he was pretty much same throughout 60s.
I also think that considering his will and his children not getting enough share from it, we should have seen the reason for it. I wish his relation with his children was explored better in the movie. I wish we would know better why he broke up with Ekkland because in movie she is looking like a perfect wife.
This movie has been made with quite fondness for Peter Sellers and his life which in reality was quite sad. In the end when he was all lonely, I wanted to go back in time and hug him. :/

Parks and Recreation review

Posted : 11 years, 8 months ago on 3 March 2013 10:17 (A review of Parks and Recreation)

first off: everyone will tell you or have told you that ehh its a office US rip off. Why bother?
second off I do not care for what people say regarding tv shows at all. I would have worried a bit, a tiny teeny bit if I was being told that it was a rip off of "family guy" or "90210" because those shows I don't care about at all but the office US has been pretty good: would I mind an office rip off? hmmm no, I don't think so.

Now that I have addressed the elephant in the room so let me answer that and say that no it's not a rip off of the office.

There are many similarities. Both have same producers/ production company. (Do tell if I am wrong here) Both follow the mokumantry style that we see nowadays a lot in tv shows. But other than that, both are pretty much very different. I am disappointed that it is not a rip off as I was told/warned about but it has its own thing going and I like it a lot.

Note: I have been an avid viewer of the office UK and then US version. I am not following the current season because it has gone boring. I don't enjoy it much now. (Just to make sure that I know what I am talking about :) )

The main thing that this show makes you laugh about is how Leslie is so positive and energetic to make a big change but she is in a department which no one usually cares about. Her positivity and energy always meets up with tons of office works and committees and meetings etc. Season 1 was kind of drag and I was little disappointed but I like to give tv shows chances because I know that unlike movies they keep evolving themselves and after season 1, I decided to give season 2 a go and I could not stop laughing at it. I mean in season 1, I would smile or something and in season 2, I am pausing it to laugh. lol
Its a rare thing to laugh like that since I do not laugh at big bang theory, modern family, family guy, the simpsons, its always sunny in philedelphia, the office and even south park is being boring these days. All of these tv shows I now watch just to fill time and look at their ratings! These all are huge and yet getting un-funny.

For me, Park s and recreation is a fresh drop of comedy in modern tv and I look forward to its episodes. Great show :)

The Imposter review

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 26 February 2013 02:33 (A review of The Imposter)

If you ever have a chance to take someone else's identity and lead their life, would you like to?
It's a twisted question and frankly it's very difficult to answer to.
This is not the first movie/documentary, I have watched that deals with impersonators. Taking lives is the one that deals with this issue as well but that movie fails at many points and turns out to be more cheezy than a thriller. You can see why I couldn't be excited about this documentary.
I watched it and within 10 mins I was IN the documentary. It is amazingly made. The re-enactments are great, cinematography is top notch and all these things beautifully support the highly interesting tale of the imposter and his thinking. The best part is that you get to hear both sides. It has a twist in the end that you would like to debate about and question director's intention behind it but over all, I had a great time with all of them in the documentary and I had this grin on my face. Very thrilling and very entertaining.

Really recommend it. Watch it for sure.

Gosford Park review

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 10 February 2013 12:20 (A review of Gosford Park)

Too many names, TOO MANY NAMES and too many characters!
The premise is rather interesting. Wealthy English man William McCordle invites (loads of) his friends to his house for shooting party. It's a period movie so we have huge army of servants and well guests to serve. All of them have ties with William so then a murder happens in house and well you have to find the murderer.

I like such movies you know, it's a great time to watch butlers, awesome food, amazing relatives bickering, their back stories and hidden motives and yes great costumes. I enjoy watching them.

But Gosford falls short on so many levels. Following are the 2 things that irritated me the most.

-HUGE CAST- names, names and names. Sometimes first name, sometime second, it is so messy that even when I was in 1 and half hr in, I couldn't tell the characters name right. Please know that it is painful to stop movie and check cast page and try to figure out ok whose gossiping am I listening to now? at one point, I was like, damn it! I am done with names now!

- cliched characters back story- You think that since these all are britishers, they'd be at least tiny bit interesting but nope! except for hollywoord producer idea and an actor, everything was cliched. I got bored of them. Even servants are not that interesting. I might seem whiny but I have watched two best gathering movies and those were waaaay interesting than this. One is "Festen (the celebration)" and the second one is murder by death. Very different but they are interesting as hell, this one... I was checking how much time was left after every 10-15 mins.

I really hoped for it to work and I tried my best to be in the movie but it didn't work for me. There is a twist in the end and I appreciate the director for not screaming it in the end but I wish it were better especially with this a grand budget and that big of a cast. Production and principle photography must have been a hell.

Before I end, Maggie Smith was amazing in her character. Acting wise movie is really good but I complained enough.

5/10

The Trip review

Posted : 11 years, 10 months ago on 27 January 2013 08:48 (A review of The Trip)

I love buddy movies...I love how characters develop throughout the movie and we laugh with them or at them so when I read about "The trip" I was up for it. I always admire British humor so for more than 1 hour or 1 hr 18 mins to be precise, I was trying very hard to like it but I then gave up. It was going nowhere till then. Eating, drinking, making impressions which got boring after a while so over all, I am quite disappointed at this movie. Could have been better.

Beautiful landscape, hotels are really nice, food looks great, acting is really good, it is great to be honest but I couldn't attach with them in any way. I found it boring, quite boring. :/

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey review

Posted : 11 years, 10 months ago on 22 January 2013 02:51 (A review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey)

wow!!!
This is a CINEMA movie so if you are waiting for it to be released on DVD, dude you are going to so regret it. Watch it in cinema, it can only be viewed there in its full potential.

Now to my review:
I am not a LOTR geek, I have seen the trilogy but it was years ago and to be honest, I have forgotton some of the races and nations living in this imaginery world so when I went to see this movie with my geek friends, I was thinking ok, so they'll be happy with it, no matter what but let's see how it goes with me. I mean I don't remember that much anyway so take it from a nromal person that this movie is AMAZING!
THe camera movements are epic, the staging, the lighting, the acting, my God!!! It surpassed every action movie I have seen in cinema, forget bond movies, hunger game, fast and furious4,5 and I was just in there, with dwarves and hobbits and was really really happy.
I have seen people complaining about hobbit: They think that hobbit producers are milking away the money and that it could have been 1 movie. To which I must say that guys, be thankful for that. I am willing to spend my money to see even 5 parts of hobbits in cinema than watch 5 random movies that don't provide half the pleasure that this movie provides.
Some other people complain and say that it is boring and long. God!!! will you stop!! It is so interesting that I forgot the time at all. It offers so much and timing is really really good. If you feel like it is long at times, are you kidding me?? movies don't need to be mind numb action only, they need a soul too and for that you need moments that are not bang bang!!

In the end, do watch this movie! it is owrth that!

Snow White and the Huntsman review

Posted : 11 years, 10 months ago on 11 January 2013 06:28 (A review of Snow White and the Huntsman)

Note: this is completely a non-serious review :D

Snow white and the hunstman, well you must have heard the story once in your childhood or in your youth so I won't like to put summary here, I am going to talk about the movie.
First of the casting was a big plus when it comes to queen. Such pretty face, so beautiful and all this because it is Charlize Theron. What a beautiful performer. Loved every scene she was in but when it comes to Kristen Stewert, meh!
I was very disappointed and apparently all those who watched her act in twilight series were because net is full of her memes, still I wanted to give her a chance but man, what a movie to blow it. I wish Amanda seyfried was the Snow white. She could have given Charlize a real threat in the competition for fairness but they chose Kristine who again choked .... and again... and again. Notice when she stands beside Charlize, Charlize dominates the frame. Way to go casting couch!
So we have a not-so-good-choking-Snow white who fails to give a motivational speech so naturally you can imagine, I spent some time in movie plain laughing at the seriousness they were trying to create. What a fuss!
first 45 mins of movie are really good, I mean really really good, next 30 mins, bearable but then it was annoying for me. I pressed skip a lot, I wish editing was tighter. The story was good, except that it could be much shorter had the queen watched Snow White in her youth, being Kristine, she would have replaced the mirror because obviously it was gone nuts.
vfx are nice, esp mirror's one but yeah that's all. Not that memorable for me. :)

That's really cool! Hope you like it. It's certainly the most easily digestible of Bela Tarr's work far as I've seen, as it avoids the relative tediousness of the Turin Horse and is only a third of the length of Satantango.
